What to Expect

This section is on the Middle Saluda River and includes a few stretches of Class II and III rapids. There is a high potential for woody debris; paddlers should use caution at all times.

Access Details

River access is upstream of Highway 11, river-right. Parking is available at Echo Valley Plaza, a gas station 0.25 miles east of the river.

Take out:
Pumpkintown Road River Access

Access Details

River can be accessed downstream of the bridge, river-left. Limited roadside parking is available 250 feet east of the bridge.Banks can be steep, use caution. This access is unofficial but regularly used. Use at your own risk. 

Trip Details

Pumpkintown Road is a short 6-minute drive from Echo Valley Plaza on Highway 11; shuttling cars should take less than half an hour. Paddlers should park at Echo Valley Plaza and portage boats 0.25 miles to the Highway 11 bridge and put in upstream river right. Once on the river, there are sections of Class II+-III rapids. The river crosses under Tilly Road and follows very closely to Long Shoals Road before reaching the Pumpkintown Road bridge. Paddlers should take out downstream of the bridge, river left. Two spots right after put in at Echo Valley Plaza where trees are completely across river. Can portage around through field, careful on the steep embankments!
