What to Expect

This trip is primarily flatwater. The river widens in this section and paddlers will see clear wide channels with forested surroundings. During lower water, paddlers will need to navigate around shallow sand bars and fallen trees.

Access Details

The Horseshoe Falls Road area is open from 9 AM - 6 PM daily. Admission to Battle of Musgrove Hill Historic Site is $3/day for adults, $1.50/day for seniors (65+), and $1/day for children (5-15); children under 5 are free. A permit from the park is required to park overnight and can be obtained by visiting the Visitor's Center, calling 864-938-0100, or emailing mgmillsp@scprt.com. Access Details

This river access is located downstream of Barrel Stave Road/Jones Bridge Road, river-right. Park along the road's shoulder. A short trail leads from the road to the river underneath the bridge. This access is unofficial; use at your own risk. Click HERE for more information. 

Trip Details

The take out at Jones Ford Road is about a 15-20 minute drive, so shuttling cars could take about 45 minutes. After putting in at the Battle of Musgrove Mill Canoe Launch, paddlers will experience some small Class I rapids and ripples for the first half mile. Jones Ford Road/Barrel Stave Road is the second bridge and the take out is downstream of the bridge, river-left.

On May 7, 2023 there was a tree across the river after a few hours of floating. The water level on that day made it a very dangerous situation. It was right after you came around a curve so it was hard to be prepared for it. As always, Just be watchful.
